Roots by Lorenzo Passi

On the occasion of the Venice Glass Week, Lorenzo Passi, artist who lives and works in Venice, in collaboration with ICI Venice from 09.09.2018 – 16.09.2018 will open the doors of his Studio to present his work, Roots-Radici.
A quest for identity stems from the wish to have deep roots, of placing the foundations of one’s soul in a place wherein self-identification may freely express itself.
A cornerstone, in a world that has very little safe and solid features, a certitude to hold on to, lies at the base of these roots, from which the tree of being is born, grows, derives nourishment, and finally branches off into the air in nodes, junctions, branches.
People, transfigured by the crazy speed of change in their lives, attempt to chase after time, hoping to attain stability: every day is an effort to try to anchor oneself firmly to life by means of certitudes.
Lorenzo Passi’s discourse centers on the impossibility for the individual to feel complete, inasmuch as he or she partakes in an existential condition wanting in the fundamental traits of security and identification. The present work starts from a tree stump, felled in a place well-known to the artist, an area in which his ancestors lived. The stump is used as a mold to create a series of cubic modules of various colors. When displayed, these create a negative image of the stump, through which light projects the image of the tree, or of what’s left of it, on the ground.
Confidence in the past wherein the tree has lived, which is also the artist’s own past, is the starting point from which he uses light to disassemble, divide, modify colors, and finally reassemble the metaphor of the illusion of existence. In occasione della Venice Glass Week, Lorenzo Passi, artista che vive e lavora a Venezia, in collaborazione con ICI Venice dal 09.09.2018 – 16.09.2018 aprirà le porte del suo Studio per presentare una sua opera inedita, Roots-Radici. L’opera nasce come ricerca di un’identità, come desiderio di affondare le radici, di piantare le fondamenta della nostra anima in un luogo nel quale potersi sentire liberi di identificarsi.
La radice come metafora del principio della vita secondo cui l’albero nasce, cresce, si nutre, si espande in ogni direzione in snodi, rami, bivi.
La radice vista anche come sostegno con il quale l’albero si ancora alla terra e mantiene il suo equilibrio.
Lorenzo Passi incentra così il suo lavoro sull’impossibilità dell’individuo di sentirsi compiuto e di vivere in una condizione esistenziale che manca dei fondamentali principi come sicurezza e identificazione ricercandoli attraverso le sue opere.
In Roots-Radice preleva la radice di un albero abbattuto, proveniente da una zona nota all’artista e nella quale hanno vissuto i suoi avi. La usa come stampo per creare una serie di moduli cubici di svariati colori che andranno, una volta disposti, a creare il negativo del ceppo; poi, attraverso la luce, proietta l’immagine della pianta o quello che ne rimane sul terreno.
Partendo dalla fiducia nel passato e dalla storia che unisce la vita della pianta e dell’artista, egli scompone, divide, varia le colorazioni e ricompone mediante la luce la metafora dell’illusione dell’esistenza.
