Murano today. Emotions in Glass, 7 October 2016 – 25 April 2017 Murano Glass Museum
The Murano Glass Museum is not only an ancient and extraordinarily unique history but is, above all, a living and current reality. Testifying the present is never easy, but the Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia with the exhibition “Murano Today. Emozioni di vetro” – held from October 7, 2015 to April 25, 2017 with the Museum ticket – has taken up the challenge of contemporaneity, aware of the central role that the Murano Glass Museum is called to play for the island and for all the actors of this millenary production, in terms of identity, preservation of memory, international showcase. With the idea, therefore, of reflecting and testifying to the creativity and mastery of today’s art – fundamental poles of an art that combines ideation and possession of technique – the Museum, strongly supported by the Mayor of Venice Luigi Brugnaro and the Board of Directors of the Foundation, wanted to involve the factories active on the island, opening a “showcase” dedicated to their production. “Murano Today. Emozioni di vetro”, curated by Gabriella Belli and Chiara Squarcina, is more than an exhibition because it codifies and translates a historical moment that reveals a renewed interest in the glass universe and in this material, as ductile as it is complex to shape, which reverberates a dumb feeling translating the extreme expressive potential of an intuition. The more than 250 works chosen, set up in the rooms of the Museum and in the adjacent garden, thus give life to a contemporary itinerary that will offer the most exhaustive vision possible of the state of the art and of the different techniques and productions, reaffirming that creative identity uniqueness that is still synonymous with the creative energy of Murano today. The exhibition examines not only artistic artefacts but also functional and design ones, an interesting opportunity to understand the evolution of this extraordinary production sector, both in technical and aesthetic terms. An itinerary that intertwines and dialogues with the extraordinary history and quality of the precious glass heritage owned by the Civic Museums. In the rooms of the former Conterie, in the Brandolini Room and in the garden of Palazzo Giustinan there are alternating works signed by designers, works created and conceived by master glassmakers, as well as artistic installations. You will see re-proposed ancient techniques and you can admire revisitations and current experimentations that combine the communicative power of glass, which in this exhibition shows that it knows how to dialogue with the most diverse materials and with the demands of art. Glass beads, goblets and cups, sculptures, lampwork, works in hot-massive solid glass, incalmi, murrine, mirrored glass, blown, beaten and engraved glass: a multiform universe of techniques and ideas. Emotions of glass. The Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia, in collaboration with various Venetian and international institutions and museums, has launched many initiatives in recent years to enhance Murano glass art and contribute to the recognition of glass as a material and object of contemporary art. The Foundation has also worked to support young creatives and the extraordinary work of master glassmakers: exhibitions, conferences, awards, study and cataloguing activities, international projects with some of the leading glass museums in the world. Reminding the world that artistic glass is produced in Murano and that ancient techniques are not forgotten, as never dulled is the audacity of those who translate into constantly renewed forms what the incandescent material suggests, is the central objective of this project, as is testified by a chorality of intent that underlines how Murano does not live clinging to memory, great and irrefutable, but projects itself TODAY with innovative pride and experimental stubbornness. “In this lagoon island flows the DNA of glass. This is the real and only difference that will always make Murano glass special, not by choice but by definition”. Quella del Vetro artistico di Murano non è solo una storia antica e straordinariamente unica ma è, soprattutto, una realtà viva e attuale. Testimoniare il presente non è mai facile, ma la Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia con la mostra “Murano Oggi. Emozioni di vetro” – che si tiene dal 7 ottobre 2015 al 25 aprile 2017 con il biglietto del Museo – ha colto la sfida della contemporaneità, consapevole del ruolo centrale che il Museo del Vetro di Murano è chiamato a svolgere per l’Isola e per tutti gli attori di questa millenaria produzione, in termini identitari, di conservazione della memoria, di vetrina internazionale. Con l’idea dunque di riflettere e testimoniare la creatività e le maestrie attuali – poli fondamentali di un’arte che coniuga capacità ideativa e possesso della tecnica – il Museo, fortemente sostenuto dal Sindaco di Venezia Luigi Brugnaro e dal Consiglio di Amministrazione della Fondazione, ha voluto coinvolgere le fabbriche attive nell’isola, aprendo una “vetrina” dedicata alla loro produzione. “Murano Oggi. Emozioni di vetro”, curata da Gabriella Belli e Chiara Squarcina, è più di una mostra perché codifica e traduce un momento storico che rivela un rinnovato interesse per l’universo vetro e per questa materia, tanto duttile quanto complessa da plasmare, che riverbera un muto sentire traducendo l’estrema potenzialità espressiva di un’intuizione. Le oltre 250 opere scelte, allestite nelle sale del Museo e nell’adiacente giardino, danno dunque vita a un percorso contemporaneo che offrirà una visione il più esaustiva possibile dello stato dell’arte e delle diverse tecniche e produzioni, a ribadire quell’unicità creativa identitaria che ancora oggi è sinonimo dell’energia creativa di Murano. L’esposizione prende in esame non solo i manufatti artistici ma anche quelli funzionali e di design, interessante occasione per capire l’evoluzione di questo straordinario settore produttivo, sia in termini tecnici che più propriamente estetici. Un percorso che s’intreccia e dialoga con la straordinaria storia e qualità del prezioso patrimonio vetrario di proprietà dei Civici Musei. Nelle sale delle ex Conterie, nella Sala Brandolini e nel giardino di Palazzo Giustinan si alternano opere firmate da designer, opere create e ideate da Maestri vetrai, nonché installazioni artistiche. Si vedranno riproposte tecniche antiche e si potranno ammirare rivisitazioni e sperimentazioni attuali che coniugano la forza comunicativa del vetro, che in questa esposizione dimostra di saper dialogare con i materiali più diversi e con le istanze dell’arte. Perle di vetro, calici e coppe, sculture, lavorazioni a lume, opere in vetro massello modellato a caldo, incalmi, murrine, vetri specchiati, vetri soffiati, battuti e incisi: un universo multiforme di tecniche e idee. Emozioni di vetro. Tante sono le iniziative che la Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia in collaborazione con diverse Istituzioni e realtà museali veneziane e internazionali ha avviato in questi anni per valorizzare l’arte vetraria muranese e contribuire al riconoscimento del vetro come materia e oggetto dell’arte contemporanea. La Fondazione si è anche impegnata per per sostenere i giovani creativi e il lavoro straordinario dei Maestri vetrai: mostre, convegni, istituzione di premi, attività di studio e catalogazione, progetti internazionali con alcuni dei principali musei vetrari nel mondo. Ricordare al mondo che a Murano si produce il vetro artistico e che le antiche tecniche non sono dimenticate, come mai sopita è l’audacia di coloro che traducono in forme continuamente rinnovate quanto la materia incandescente suggerisce, è l’obiettivo centrale di questo progetto, come lo è testimoniare una coralità di intenti che sottolinea come Murano non viva aggrappata alla memoria, grande e inconfutabile, ma si proietti OGGI con orgoglio innovativo e caparbietà sperimentale. “In quest’isola lagunare scorre il DNA del vetro. Questa è la vera e unica differenza che renderà sempre speciale il vetro di Murano, non per scelta ma per definizione”.
